Study Skills - Dissertations

An overview of how to plan and write up your dissertation.

Why do a Dissertation Proposal

Some courses require students to submit a dissertation proposal before they begin their research.

Even if your course does not, it can be a useful exercise which can make the process of completing your dissertation less stressful as you are clear on your purpose from the beginning of the process.

What is a Dissertation Proposal?

  • A dissertation proposal is a written plan which details how you will complete your research and analysis.
    • Proposals can be useful to demonstrate your thinking to your supervisor - they can then use this to identify any potential issues with your plan and work with you to address these.

What Should your Proposal Include?

Dawson (2009) suggests the following structure however you should refer to the guidance given by your academic department.

1. Title Your title should be short and explanatory.
2. Introduction A brief overview of the project itself.
3. Background Why are you doing this research and why is it necessary?
4. Aims and Objectives Usually one overall aim broken down into two or three smaller objectives.
5. Methods/methodology How you plan to conduct your research and why?
6. Timetable Detail important deadlines.
