Jeet Zdung has won the 2023 Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration with Saving Sonya: Chang and the Sun Bear.
This award is judged by children’s librarians for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people.
The press release states that “This is the second consecutive year that a graphic novel has clinched the prize. Written and inspired by the real life of Vietnamese wildlife conservationist Dr Trang Nguyen, the “beautiful” manga-inspired illustrations – including scenic watercolours and detailed, pencil sketched journal entries – work together to offer “something new to discover on each re-reading” and inspire and educate young wildlife activists.” (quote is from Yoto Carnegie web site).
Suzie Williams, our Academic Liaison Librarian for the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries, has bought the book for the library so you can read it yourself - it is listed on Library Search. She really enjoyed reading the book and said, "The story of a young child who is inspired to become a wildlife conservationist is conveyed so eloquently through the evocative illustrations."
