Research Assistant: Overview

A guide to using Research Assistant, a generative AI-powered tool, effectively and cohesively with Library Search.
Making AI tools work for your research, your way. This guide is to help you get the best from Research Assistant and Library Search. Research Assistant is a generative AI-powered tool and a helpful starting point, but it does not replace Library Search. Here’s how to use both effectively, so you get relevant, accurate, and up-to-date sources for your assignments.

What is Library Search for?

Library Search is your go-to tool for:

  • Doing deeper research using your own keywords.
  • Exploring a full range of Library content: articles, ebooks, books, and databases.
  • Accessing full text from trusted and peer-reviewed Library-subscribed and open access resources.
  • Finding more specific, targeted resources for your assignments.

Research Assistant is a generative AI-powered tool built into Library Search.

What does Research Assistant do?

Research Assistant is powered by generative AI. If you input a question (for example, your essay question), Research Assistant will provide:

  • A summary of the topic.
  • A list of up to five sources connected to keywords from your question.

The summary is created from the most pertinent information in the descriptions and abstracts of the five sources. In-line references to these sources provide transparency in how each one contributes to the summary. Beneath the summary, these sources and additional sources are available for further exploration of the subject and for verifying the Research Assistant's responses.

Use the filters in your search to show only results which are:

  • Available online. Use the 'Available Online' filter to ensure search results show full-text content that the Library subscribes to, rather than just abstracts or unavailable sources.
  • Dates. Use this filter if you require resources which were published within a specific time period.
  • Types. Use this filter if you want specific resource types.

There are limits:

  • Research Assistant does not "read" the full content of the source. It only uses the description or abstract, so sometimes the link between your question and the source may not be strong or relevant. Make sure to also read the source and evaluate whether it is relevant and appropriate.
  • You can’t ask follow-up questions or have a conversation like with other AI tools.
  • Research Assistant may miss newer or more appropriate materials if you don’t use the filters.
