The Copyright Licencing Agency Higher Education (CLAHE) Licence is the main licence affecting day-to-day copying and digitisation within the University. Subject to the limitations set out below, the CLA HE Licence allows University of Sunderland staff to make photocopies and digitise extracts from printed books, journals, and magazines published in the UK and other territories, including the USA, Canada, Australia and all the major European countries.
In addition, digital copies can be created from those digital material publishers that have opted in to the CLA Licence (see the CLA website for an up-to-date list). If the publisher of a digital original publication is not shown on this list, then the material may not be copied or reused under the terms of the licence.
The CLA Licence applies only to current students and staff employed by the University of Sunderland.
The CLA Licence permits copying specified amounts for educational purposes within the institution, providing:
This means:
Multiple photocopies and digitised extracts must only be distributed with reference to a specific course of study.
Lawful copying over the allowances detailed below is permitted only at the discretion of the copyright owner and may be subject to the payment of a fee. If you require more than the amounts specified below, please read the Library's Digitisation Guide and email the Library's digitisation team for advice.
The CLA Licence applies a maximum limit to the number of multiple copies of an extract that can be made.
Photocopying may be undertaken by staff or students of the University.
Scanning and digitisation for reading lists may only be undertaken by members of the Library's digitisation team. Staff must not upload scanned copies of chapters, journal articles, or other materials to materials to Canvas or Library Reading Lists. Please email the Library's digitisation team for assistance with adding items to your reading lists.
The CLA HE Licence enables registered staff and students at the University to make copies from the following items that the Library owns or subscribes to:
Material published electronically or on the internet: The CLA HE Licence also covers the downloading and copying of electronic material from some free-to-view websites (see the CLA website for more information).
Lawful copying in excess of the allowances detailed below is permitted only at the discretion of the copyright owner and may be subject to the payment of a fee
The following categories of material may not be copied under the CLA Licence:
Please note, some separate illustrations, diagrams, and photographs may not always fall under the CLA HE Licence. Before copying such material, you should enquire as to whether consent from individual rights holders is required.
If your request exceeds 10%, it may be possible to buy a second extract licence to obtain this content via the CLA Second Extract Permissions Service (SEPS) which offers an option to buy permission to copy and use an additional amount – a ‘second extract’ – e.g., another chapter from the book or another 10% of the total pages. Costs can be prohibitive, so please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian to discuss this in the first instance.
