Essay Introduction

In an introduction to your essay it is important to define any terms or topics that may need an explanation and to provide information about how you are using any key words so that the essay can be easily understood.

It may be useful to explain the purpose of your essay and the specific topics you are going to cover and in what order. It is not a piece of creative writing! It is important to state what you are going to do and then link this to your conclusion. If your essay covers a number of topics rather than having one question, ensure that you mention each specific section and make it clear in what order you are going to address each point.

The introduction of an essay is usually about 10% of the total word count, so for a longer essay you will include more details concerning 'setting the scene' before starting on the main body.

It is important to confirm your position in your introduction, this will be apparent throughout your essay and it may explain why you have chosen to focus on a specific points. It is impossible to discuss everything so remember that your essay needs to be clear, specific and to the point throughout.

Remember, when you are writing your first draft it is sometimes easier to write your introduction once you have written the main body of your essay, this way you know what you have written and in what order.
