We recommend accessing, building and managing your reading lists all within Canvas. Just click on the Library Reading List link from the left-hand menu in your module space to get started.
You can also access your reading lists from the Library website homepage. Just click on the Library Reading List link and search for your module by module code or title.
Most Library Reading Lists are created by the Library at the point that new programmes go through a validation or revalidation process.
A draft (or shell) Library Reading List is created, and the indicative titles added. We also assign a ‘course’ to the new list within the Library Reading Lists system, so that it links to the relevant Canvas module.
The new list can be accessed and worked on by the module leader as you develop your new module. The new Library Reading List remains in draft (unpublished) until you are ready to send it to the Library for review and publication.
When developing a new module, we recommend getting in touch with your Academic Liaison Librarian before the validation event, when you are starting to think about relevant reading. Your Academic Liaison Librarian can advise on relevant content already in the library collection, such as ebook collections, academic journals and specialist databases. They can also check pricing and licensing options for titles that we don’t already hold and can suggest great Open Access options.
Academic staff with 'Lead Teacher' roles in Canvas (module leaders) are the only staff who can build and manage Library Reading Lists as Instructors.
Module Leaders who wish other staff to edit lists (for example academic tutors) can give editing access by changing the staff members role on Canvas to Lead Teacher for the relevant module.
Get in touch with your Academic Liaison Librarian or chat to us on Library Talk if you have any questions about Instructor access for your Library Reading Lists.
If there isn’t a Library Reading List available for your module, get in touch with your Academic Liaison Librarian or chat to us on Library Talk and we will create your list and associated course for you.
