We can help you develop as a learner and improve your study, research, and language skills to help you reach your potential.

Study and research skills

We offer support, advice, and guidance on a range of topics, including academic writing, critical thinking, referencing, time management, revision skills, and dissertation writing. Our team of Study Skills Advisers can answer your academic study skills queries, and our team of Academic Liaison Librarians can support you with subject-specific searches and research questions. We also offer numeracy support. Whether you want to develop the fundamentals or stretch a particular study skill, we are here to help throughout your studies.

English language suppport

As a University of Sunderland student, you can apply for free English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Business Studies (EBS) courses if English is not your first language. These are in-sessional modules, meaning that they run during term time, and are designed to develop your English language skills alongside your main programme of study. We also run 'native speaker' courses for students whose first language is English, or who are fluent in English as a second language, and who want to develop their academic language skills to complement their studies.
