Subject Guide: Education

This guide brings together library resources for your studies and research. Use these resources alongside your recommended reading from your tutors to extend your research into new areas

Books & eBooks

Books are one of the type of resources you will use to develop your understanding of your topic (this can be referred to as your field of study).

Print copies: you will find these on the shelves in the Library. Most of the Education collection is held at St Peter's Library.

eBooks: You can access these on any device (laptops, tablets, phones) provided you are connected to the internet and signed into your university account with your university ID and password.

Types of books

Textbooks are useful to give you an understanding of your topic. They give a summary of the state of research at the point of writing. They do not include new research, although they can contain a point of view on the field. Textbooks can be on specific aspects in the field of education as well as on research methods.

Research books (sometimes called monographs) contain the original research of the author(s). They are often based on several years of research and some of the results of this research has sometimes been published earlier in journal articles.

Edited volumes are put together by one or several editors. The editors decided on the theme of the books, asked for contributions from researchers, and curated the chapters. They generally write the introduction and conclusion to the collected chapters. These individual chapters are written by one or more authors on a specific topic / theme. The chapters will generally contain original research.

Conference proceedings: these contain written versions of presentations delivered at academic conferences. Academic conferences are gatherings of researchers where they discuss a specific theme or themes. These are generally based on original research.
