One to One Appointments

One-to-one advice

One-to-one study skills appointments are available to all Sunderland Campus undergraduate, taught-postgraduate, and Independent Distance Learning students (this does not include Sunderland Online programmes). They are a confidential one-to-one or small group appointments. If you are looking for advice on academic skills, you should first explore our online guides. These are available on a range of topics and should answer the most common queries.

Academic Liaison Librarians offer appointments on finding resources for your studies, our Study Skills Advisers offer appointments on a range of academic study skills such as being critical and referencing. Appointments last for up to one hour.

Appointments are requested via our form below. If necessary, you may request up to two appointments per assignment. Appointments will be delivered in person or online via Microsoft Teams.

Before requesting a one-to-one appointment, please look at our expectations.

What can we help you with?

We can provide advice and guidance in line with the University Assessment Policy. This includes advice on how to search for library resources, planning, academic writing, how to develop independent referencing skills and how to proofread your work. Study Skills Advisers can review work which has already been marked and has your tutor’s feedback. We can help you to reflect on the feedback received and discuss how you can build on this in the future.
If you are studying at one of our partner colleges your Study Skills support will be provided by your college.
If you are studying on a Sunderland Online programme, you do not have access to one-to-one support, but you can utilise our wide range of online Study Skills Guides, access quick query support at our Daily Drop-ins and book on to online Study Skills Masterclasses.

What are we unable to help with and why?

In line with the University's Academic Integrity and Misconduct Regulations, students must be able to demonstrate that their work is entirely their own. Our service is here to develop your independent academic study skills, a key element of which is the ability to proofread your work. We can provide advice on how to proofread but will not read or check draft assignments before submission. We cannot offer any opinion on the mark you might receive for your work.

Advisers may read one small section of your work, an assignment plan, or discuss your general approach to a piece of work to provide the most relevant study skills advice for your needs. Please be aware that we will only provide advice on a particular assignment up to two times. This is to ensure the work is entirely your own.
