Study Skills- Understanding Feedback

A Skills guide focussed on understanding feedback at University.

Referencing

This page may be useful if you have received feedback from your assignments about referencing. It also has links to our full referencing guide for more information.

Referencing is when you acknowledge that the idea used in your work was originally inspired by another person. By referencing your sources you are indicating to your lecturer that you have read widely, considered different perspectives and have put forward a well reasoned argument that is founded in knowledge from literature.

Check out the video below to support you with using Cite Them Right Online to reference at university.

Why reference?

By referencing you will not only be giving credit to the author for their ideas but will demonstrate to your lecturer where you have got the information from that has formed your ideas. This may make your assignment easier to follow and understand.

To explore this further, why not check out the poster below for links to sources to support you with your referencing at university?

Summarising

Summarising involves condensing the source material into a shorter form. This may involve giving an overview of a book chapter or journal article.

  • Read and think – what is this telling me – (in the fewest possible words)?

Summarising is:

  • A brief ‘easy to read’ version of a longer piece of writing.
  • Contains the main points written in your own words.
  • A citation and reference is still required.

The video below covers some points to remember when summarising information.
