Subject guide: Performance

This guide brings together library resources for your studies and research. Use these resources alongside your recommended reading from your tutors to extend your research into new areas.

Introduction

Books (print and online) are a good way of getting a greater understanding of a topic. You may wish to pop into the library and browse the shelves, but how do you know which books are the most suitable for your current assignment?

All books and ebooks within Sunderland collections are available via our Library Search which you can access directly from the library web page.

Module Reading Lists

  • Your lecturer will have recommended books to use in your module - these will be listed on Library Reading Lists within your Canvas module or online directly through Library Reading Lists on the library home page.

  • Library Reading Lists are a good starting point for your work. These reading lists are created and curated by your lecturers, and contain the essential and recommended reading for your modules.

  • You will also be expected to read around your subject and find your own relevant titles. For wider reading you can use Library Search to look for specific titles, author names or keywords.

Books and ebooks

To find print books and ebooks in the library go to the Library home page and use Library Search. As soon as you are prompted to do so, log in with your university username and password, so you can see full details and request items.

You can limit your search results to books by using the ‘Refine your results’ on the left hand side and under ‘Resource type’ select ‘books’. To limit to ebooks select ‘Availability – available online’.

You can search by a variety of ways including:

  • A specific book title eg: Beginning musical theatre dance.
  • An author name(s) eg: Double, O. (use advanced search).
  • Subject keyword(s) eg: choreography.
  • Or a combination of these eg: Dixon digital performance.

The majority of the print books you’ll need to use can be found at St Peter’s Library and at Library@DavidGoldman. Due to wide-ranging nature of performing arts and music, there aren’t just a few shelves where you will find relevant books, so always use Library Search to check the shelfmark of the book. In the following informal video Suzie, your Academic Liaison Librarian, shows you how to find books and other resources on the shelves.

Can I create a list of books I am interested in?

Yes, follow this steps outlined in this video on how to use the ‘My Favourites’ feature in Library Search, and you can start creating your own reading lists straightaway. As you use Library Search you will find books and other resources you want to consult now for an assignment or that you may want to look at in the future. You can label or tag the resources by your module code or keywords that are meaningful to you.

Can the library help me develop my reading skills?
