Study Skills- Transitioning to University

A guide to some skills to develop when transitioning to university study.

Becoming an independent learner

As we saw in the What is different about University section, you'll be responsible for your own attendance, learning, time management and adherence to the rules and conventions of academic work which means that building your resilience is an important part of your life at university.

Although of course we hope that you have a great time here at UoS, you will find from time to time that you'll have to deal with a disappointment or two - learning from these setbacks can ensure that you finish your studies with a positive mindset.

Here are some hints and tips for promoting resilience at university:

  • build positive relationships with people on your course and staff
  • ask for support from the library and other teams around the university - WE'RE ALL HERE TO HELP YOU!
  • keep your schedule balanced and realistic, don't forget to take your obligations (family, job etc) into account. And don't forget to schedule yourself some downtime!
  • read the Understanding Feedback Library Guide below to see the importance of reflecting on assignment feedback rather than reacting emotionally (easier said than done, we know!)

Watch the video below to see students discuss what resilience means to them.

Making the most of the Library

It's well worth getting to know the library at the beginning of your studies, so you can hit the ground running. Things you'll need to know include:

  • using the printers
  • using the library PCs and loaning laptops
  • finding your module reading lists, searching using the library catalogue and checking your materials out
  • logging into the WIFI
  • accessing Cite Them Right
  • where to ask if you need more help

The Library Essentials Library Guide video below provides answers and links to general library questions and more.
