Embargoes

By default, we will make theses Open Access on SURE. However, for some thesis, it will be appropriate to apply an embargo.

An embargo is a time-limited restriction on access.

Our current regulations state that an embargo of up to two years can be applied PhD thesis.

The embargo will be agreed by the Graduate School and your supervisors.

It is important to have a clear reason when asking for an embargo. The request for an embargo will be added to the declaration form you fill in on submitting your thesis.

This is something that might need to be considered at the inception of the research project when considering ethical application and consent of potential participants.

The following reasons can be used to support your application for an embargo:

  • commercial sensitivity
  • ethical or legal issues
  • data protection compliance
  • issues of health and safety
  • national security implication
  • unlicensed reproduction of third-party copyrighted material (although uploading a redacted version is an option in this case)
  • intent to publish (It is important to note that some publishers do not consider a thesis on a repository as a prior publication, so an indication of the publisher(s) under consideration and their policies regarding thesis on a repository would be useful to balance the need for publication and the University's commitments to Open Research. See guidance on publishing your thesis)
  • Exemptions to Freedom of information Act (2000) listed in Part II of the Act

There might be cases where you can apply for an extension of the embargo for a further 2 years and for a maximum of 5 years.

Applications for a permanent embargo will only be considered on a case by case basis.
