Understanding Open Access, using SURE, and support for academic publishing

Non-traditional research outputs

Research outputs that fall outside the traditional peer-reviewed academic models of journal articles, books and book chapters, and published conference papers, are often referred to as 'Grey Literature'.

Grey Literature includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Project Reports
  • Working Papers
  • PhD Theses
  • Blog Posts
  • Newsletters
  • Social Media
  • Podcasts
  • Commissioned Reports

This material, while forming a large and important part of the research profile of many scholarly institutions, is often difficult to access due to a lack of established platforms devoted to these non-commercial publications. Similarly, it can be difficult to know where to archive Grey Literature, and these outputs can become lost in departmental web pages or, in many cases, are not recorded anywhere.

You can find a lot more information about Grey Literature on these NHS web pages.

SURE can archive almost every type of Grey Literature and make it Open Access, so you can publicise all your research activities, link to them, and have a reliable record of everything you do.
