Read and Publish deals (also known as transformational deal) are agreements between publishers and research institutions. They are designed to facilitate a move to complete Open Access scholarly communications. They build on existing arrangements between institutions and publishers. The University Library still pays subscription charges to read the content that sits behind paywalls, and also adds an option for authors to publish content without further charges to the institution.
They can be a helpful route to Gold Open Access for which an Author Processing Charge (APC) is required.
Our deals are being reviewed regularly and options may be added if they will benefit our authors. Details will be added here, and announcements made via USOnline and our blog when new deals are secured.
To be able to use these agreements through there are a few conditions you need to fulfill:
If all these ocnditions are met then the cost of your APC can be covered by one of our agreements.
See the PlanS FAQ for more information about APCs
Each deal will work in a slightly different way. It is important to familiarise yourself with the terms that are relevant to you. Some of the deals are capped (limited to a certain number of APCs across the institution signed up to the agreement). It may not be possible to know until the point of acceptance whether you will be able to publish gold open access through the agreement.
Make sure you get in touch with the team if you have any questions: sure@sunderland.ac.uk.
